When the audience chooses the music

We performed our first “As You Like It” concert and it was a blast.

Each audience member received a number and a program with a list of songs. We chose the first and last songs, but in between the audience called the shots. A random number generator spit out a number, and whoever had that number picked the next song.

The result was a set list unlike anything we would have consciously put together. And that made it a lot of fun to play.

We opened with a medley of three Beatles’ songs (that way, we didn’t have to decide which one Beatles song we would include on the menu). Then it was the audience’s turn. In order, they chose:

  • Morning Has Broken

  • The Voice of Your Eyes (one of our originals)

  • Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)

  • Remember Me (from Coco)

  • Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)

  • Send in the Clowns (from A Little Night Music)

  • A Dream of Whitney (an original)

  • Greensleeves

  • The Girl from Ipanema

  • Granada (Lara)

  • Over the Rainbow

  • Whiskey Before Breakfast

  • Cigarette Daydreams (Cage the Elephant)

  • Clair de Lune (DeBussy)

  • Romance (for guitar and cello)

And we wrapped up with a third original, “Lourdes,” which uses all three of our instruments through the magic of a backing track.

We look forward to more “As You Like It” presentations, eager to see what the next audience will chose. Give us a call if you’d like to host a house concert with this program.
